Three years ago I left my job as a tech reporter at Tortoise Media, deleted all my online accounts, and set off without a phone, to journey from London to North Wales on a tiny narrowboat.On that journey I met a carpenter called Lewis. He took me on as an apprentice and we travelled around the country building saunas for a year.
Approaching the end of my apprenticeship, I heard rumours of a workshop nestled in a mountain forest in Corris, North Wales, where a team of young carpenters were crafting the finest saunas in the lands. I applied to join, and spent a year there working as a carpenter.
Proficient with my new skills, I was hired to help build some cabins on the side of a hill in Monmouth for the Channel 4 Show ‘Impossible Builds’. I expected to be assisting some more veteran carpenter, but ended up as principle contractor for the build. They took one year to build and have been a success. The client was Jamies Farm - an incredible charity hosting care farms around the UK.
After that I returned to London, did a long feature piece about hitchhiking for the Observer, and now I’m working on a book.
